Opus Breaks Ground on Build-to-Suit Facility for Elgin Recycling

Opus Breaks Ground on Build-to-Suit Facility for Elgin Recycling

September 25, 2025 Craig Etkin

GILBERTS, IL – September 25, 2025 – Opus today announced that it has broken ground on a new 52,174-square-foot build-to-suit facility for Elgin Recycling in Gilberts, Illinois. The new facility at 58 Center Drive is in the Turnberry Lakes Business Park, where Elgin Recycling’s headquarters and one of its four Chicago-area recycling scrap yards are also located.

According to Luke Zizzo, senior project manager with Opus, Opus’ Client Direct Services group earned the Elgin project in part due to a referral from a previous client. “We’re always delighted when one of our clients is so happy with our process and our product that they recommend us to others. At the same time, we believe in the quality of our work and our design-build approach, so we welcome the opportunity to compete for and win new opportunities, as we did with Elgin Recycling.”

Elgin Recycling is a family owned operation that processes ferrous and non-ferrous metals, exotic alloys and electronics. Their new Gilberts location will process recycled electronics from public drop-off facilities, breaking them down into components that will then be transported to electronics components recyclers. The company has R2 certification, which ensures they follow responsible and sustainable practices in the handling of electronic waste, promoting environmental protection, data security and worker safety.

“Our friends at Chicago Logistic Service encouraged us to consider Opus when we first recognized a need to expand our operations, and I’m very glad they did,” said Bob Conroy, owner and president of Elgin Recycling. “Opus quickly earned our confidence when they shared their integrated design-build model and showed us how they’ll maximize our square footage and save us time and money in getting this new facility up and running.”

Elgin Recycling’s new Gilberts facility, which sits on a 2.76-acre site, will include a 28-foot clear height, six dock doors, two drive-in doors and up to 58 vehicle parking stalls.

Opus is the design-builder on the project and is working in partnership with Architects Plus Design Studio PLLC, the architect of record, and Structural Enginuity, Inc., the structural engineer of record. The project is slated for completion in January 2026.
